Solution architecture creation and support for architecture deployment

Over the years, various architectures have been laid out for supporting the development and management of data systems, and of operations in a broad sense. This type of structural description is often referred to as the overall architecture.

Often, however, the overall architecture ends up being such a complex description that the content is not widely comprehensible. What also sometimes happens is that the logical architectural description is not complied with during the implementation phase, due to factors such as lack of time, or the implementation architecture ends up being created on the terms of the chosen systems and technologies. In such cases, it is fair to say that the work has been at least partially wasted.

Ready-made components often differ from what is actually needed: figuratively speaking, one has to get the whole house, even when all that is needed is a sauna.

At Modifica, we have worked on overall architecture, particularly in regards to digitization and digital services. Our model assumes starts from the premise that it will be used to guide the development of operations, and of digital services that support the operations, in such a way that the service requirements determine the requirements for technical matters as well.

The total architecture

total architectre model

The biggest benefit of an overall architecture model comes when its content is widely understood and followed.

In our experience, the best way to implement and deploy an overall architecture is to make it a model common to both managers of (business) operations and people working with systems. A clear procedure for management of an overall architecture must be created, such that, if this procedure is followed, the architecture will be modified in a controlled manner and, through cooperation, kept in good working order at all times.

Key outputs

The key output of the service is a total architecture model that is accepted by all parties involved. The adjacent image shows a top-level description of architecture components.

The following actions will be taken over the course of the service:

  • Agreement on the scope of the content of the overall architecture
  • Identification of the components of the agreed-on content of the overall architecture, and creation and maintenance of the overall architecture model
  • Review of the overall architecture against the background of the current implementation architecture, and agreement on the responsibility roles entailed in the overall architecture model
  • Creation of a road map for implementation of the overall architecture
  • Production and submission of the final project report
